What's a Finishing LUT?

Finishing LUTs are designed to tie your entire sequence of shots together, resulting in a cohesive, cinematic tone. They're less about infusing new color into your project and more about tightening up all of your shots around a disciplined color palette. The focus of each Finishing LUT is uniform consistency across all of your footage, preservation of color integrity, and a stylized look - in that order.Whether you use them as a starting point, in conjunction with other LUTs you already own, or as the final touch in your workflow, Finishing LUTs can improve your color grading process.Note: Finishing LUTs are not conversion LUTs. If you shoot in LOG format or a different color space, please normalize your footage to Rec. 709 before applying a Finishing LUT.

What programs and footage are Finishing LUTs compatible with?

Programs

If your editing software supports 3D LUTs, our Finishing LUTs are compatible. Compatible programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Adobe Premiere Pro

  • Final Cut Pro

  • DaVinci Resolve

  • Avid Media Composer

  • Filmora Video Editor

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • etc.

Note: Finishing LUTs are not Lightroom presets.

Footage

Finishing LUTs work with any standard video footage (Which should be in a color space known as Rec. 709 by default). If you shoot standard footage on your camera, you’re good to go.
Note: Finishing LUTs are not conversion LUTs. If you shoot in LOG format or a different color space, please normalize your footage to Rec. 709 before applying a Finishing LUT.

How do I install Finishing LUTs?

Adobe Premiere and After Effects

You can manually install the Finishing LUTs into the Lumetri Effects Panel by performing the following steps:

Step 1

Step 2

Create a folder called “LUTs”, then create a folder inside the LUTs folder called “Creative”

Step 3

Copy your Finishing LUTs into the Creative folder, then restart Premiere or After Effects

Step 4

Add a Lumetri effect to your footage, then open the Creative tab of Lumetri. You’ll now be able to see all your Finishing LUTs in the Looks dropdown.

Final Cut Pro X

You can install Finishing LUTs into Final Cut Pro X by performing the following easy steps:

Step 1

Open the Effects Browser, search for LUT, and drag the Custom LUT effect to your footage

Step 2

In the Custom LUT controls, select the LUT dropdown and choose “Reveal in Finder”

Step 3

Drag your Finishing LUTs to this folder. You’ll now be able to see all your Finishing LUTs in the LUT dropdown.

Can I use Finishing LUTs to edit photos?

Yes, as long as you use a photo editing software that supports 3D LUTs, such as Adobe Photoshop CC, our Finishing LUTs are compatible. They are not compatible with Adobe Lightroom.

Because Finishing LUTs are optimized to avoid artifacting on video footage, you may find them to be a bit subtle when applied to photos. In this case, you’ll simply want to dial up the intensity until the desired color grade is reached. Finishing LUTs also work great as the final step in your existing color grading process.
